Volume 4, 1993

Preface

This volume of the Perspectives series reports research on the efficacy of different research modalities. As in previous editions, there are several reviews of animal models of human diseases. Expanding on previous research of animal models of childhood diseases, Eric Dunayer evaluates a new animal model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and he analyses animal models of two other major genetic childhood diseases--cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia. Similarly, Stephen Kaufman, adding to previous work, critiques visual deprivation research on animals and an animal model of orbital floor fractures.

Murry Cohen has reviewed three research projects involving neurology and psychopharmacology. One paper, with three co-authors, addresses controversial experiments on vocalization in monkeys at Northwestern University.

Paul Contard reports exciting developments using a new in vitro system to study various tissues, particularly skin. Five book reviews covering a broad range of topics related to medical research complete this edition.

Because the MRMC plans to concentrate on disseminating its findings to date, there will be a hiatus in the publication of future volumes of Perspectives. Book reviews and analyses of research will appear in our newsletter MRMC Report.
